Licensed Electrician’s Assessment (LEA)

An electrician’s licence entitles the licence holder to carry out all types of electrical installation work in Victoria without supervision.

To obtain an electrician’s licence, Energy Safe specifies that an apprentice electrician must satisfactorily complete the Licensed Electrician's Assessment (LEA) conducted by an approved assessment centre.

FES is an Energy Safe approved assessment centre and also provides training services for anyone wishing to undertake refresher training prior to sitting their LEA.

The LEA is a combination of three assessments, undertaken on separate occasions:

All assessments have a minimum pass mark of 75%.

Upon successful completion of each of these 3 assessments, electrical licences can be obtained through Energy Safe. Please note, FES does not issue licenses.

FES offers tailored refresher training and preparation for licensing assessments, to equip individuals with the confidence and skills they need to succeed.

By practising in the comfortable simulated environment of our Industry Centre in Clayton (south east Melbourne), candidates have the chance to reduce their levels of nerves and stress prior to their assessment(s). FES also works directly with TAFEs to offer training at their campus’.

FES has a team of highly experienced and knowledgeable trainers who are passionate about education and setting others up for success.

First-time success rates indicate that on and off the job training during an apprenticeship is often not enough to successfully pass the LEA. Apprentices work across many areas in the industry, and may not get enough exposure to, or have enough experience in carrying out, the work prescribed in the LEA assessments.

Our experience in delivering the LEA for over 30 years, tells us that exposure to focused training, practiced in comfortable simulated environments, and performing the skills regularly on the job, is the best way to prepare for sitting an LEA assessment.

Industry preference is for LEA candidates to practice independently for at least 2 weeks after attending a training session before considering sitting their assessment. This further ensures long term retention of the knowledge and skills learnt in training.

Candidates can lower the stress levels and calm the nerves before their LEA by choosing one of the following training options:

During this one–day course, you will practice what you need to know and demonstrate to successfully complete your Safe Working Practices (SWP) assessment.

Through undertaking this tuition, you are giving yourself the opportunity to successfully complete your SWP assessment, correctly using the Insulated Gloves.

Should you feel you are not quite ready after a day, we recommend that you undertake further skills training and get more practice.

During this three–day course, you will practice what you need to know and demonstrate to successfully complete your Licenced Electrical Theory (LET) assessment.

Through undertaking this training, you are giving yourself the opportunity to successfully complete your LET assessment, navigating the new Wiring Rules correctly.

Should you feel you are not ready after the 3 days, we recommend that you undertake further skills training and get more practice.

During this three–day course, you will practice what you need to know and demonstrate to successfully complete your Licenced Electrical Practical (LEP) assessment.

Through undertaking this training, you are giving yourself the opportunity to successfully complete your LEP assessment, learning to design, wire and test an electrical installation to the new Wiring Rules correctly. Our equipment is set out to allow you to practice at your own pace and ask for assistance as required.

To sit the LEA, applicants must provide evidence to the assessment body that they are authorised to sit the relevant assessment/s.

The evidence you need to provide before you can sit the LEA depends on the path you have taken, but may include:

Electrician (Supervised) Licence (ES Class); or
Supervised Worker’s Licence (L Class); or
Electrician’s (A Class) license. This is required for REC Technical Assessment; or
Offshore Technical Skills Record (OTSR) or Australian Recognised Trade Certificate (ARTC); or
Energy Safe must provide approval for you to sit the assessment (if your licence has expired).

For all assessments, candidates must bring photographic identification (ID) e.g. drivers' licence, passport, student ID card, etc).

For all practical assessments, these are simulating a ‘real life’ workplace environment. As such, all candidates must dress appropriately as they would for work, and wear the following Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

Long sleeve shirts
Long pants (no tracksuit pants)
Suitable footwear with mechanical toe protection or boots to the ankle (no runners)

If candidates are not wearing the appropriate clothing as per Energy Safe Victoria Licensing Assessment Rules and AS/NZS 4836:2023 Safe Working on or near low-voltage and extra-low voltage electrical installations and equipment, FES is required to exclude them from commencing their assessment.

Equipment:

Gloves:
- Insulating gloves rated to 650V, marked with Australian Standard AS2225
- Flame resistant outers that also provide mechanical protection
- Inners preferred for hygiene, but are optional for candidate supplied gloves.
Analogue Insulation Resistance and Continuity Tester. Criteria for testers are:
- Analogue only
- No indication for Pass/Fail
- Minimum of 250V/500V scale
- Minimum 2x continuity scales
- True moving coil meter.

Please note that replacement testers will only be provided if a candidate’s batteries run out or the tester is not calibrated.

Standards and Regulations are not required for this assessment.
