Job Opportunities in the Energy Sector in Australia

Australia's energy sector is rapidly evolving, creating new job opportunities. Driven by renewable energy initiatives, technological advancements, and demand for skilled workers in traditional energy industries, various sectors are offering current and future employment prospects. Below is an overview of these opportunities.

The impact of the transition to a net zero economy on energy jobs

The demand for skilled energy sector workers employed to build and maintain energy infrastructure is forecast to grow from approximately 32,000 people in 2024 to a peak of over 60,000 across the horizon to 2050, in the AEMO 2024 ISP Step Change scenario.1

Figure 1 shows that under a Step Change scenario, from 2020 to 2035, it is expected that solar and wind technologies will drive renewable energy jobs growth. On average, solar accounts for nearly half of all renewable energy jobs, with rooftop solar accounting on average 32% of all renewable energy jobs. The other major contributor, wind farms will create on average 30% of all renewable energy jobs.2

Even for individual states of the NEM, under the Step Change scenario from 2023 to 2050, the electricity workforce is dominated by wind and solar jobs.3 Figure 2 shows the ISP projections for average electricity jobs by state under the Step change scenario from 2023 to 2050.

Specialised Job Opportunities

Australia's energy industry is characterised by dynamic growth and transformation, creating diverse job opportunities. While traditional roles in electricity generation and gas supply remain important, the rise of renewables and new technologies such as hydrogen and battery storage are driving demand for specialised skills. As the country transitions to a more sustainable energy future, the need for a skilled workforce in areas like renewable integration, digital infrastructure, and hydrogen production will only increase.
