Building more supportive workplaces and increasing women’s participation in clean energy.

About the Project
The Powering Women into Clean Energy Apprenticeships project aims to address clean energy skill shortages through supporting employers with female apprentices to identify and address specific systemic and cultural barriers to women’s participation in the electrical industry.
The project focuses on addressing clean energy skill shortages by designing and testing more equitable apprenticeship models that enhance workplace culture and safety.
Expanding the talent pool and diversifying the electrical workforce is essential for sustainability and to meet the forecast required growth of the electrical industry.
How do we build more inclusive workplaces and increase women’s participation in electrotechnology and clean energy?
The Powering Women into Clean Energy Apprenticeships project will:
- Identify barriers to women’s participation through applied research
- Support employers who want to recruit and retain female apprentices
- Create practical tools, policies and guidance for employers
- Drive flexible, safe and inclusive training and employment practices
- Promote women in electrical trades through school, community and industry engagement

A Story of Women Leading Change
What This Project Will Do
Identify barriers & opportunities
Conduct applied research and a Gender Impact Analysis to report on structural and cultural barriers preventing women from entering and completing electrical apprenticeships.
Gender Impact Assessment Report now released. Discover the findings.
Develop practical tools for industry
Create inclusive policies and resources for employers and training providers, such as:
- work health and safety policies
- flexible work guidance
- employer mentoring resources
- cultural awareness tools
Enhance career progression for women in clean energy
Support 36 women undertaking a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician apprenticeship through employer-led workplace support
Encourage change in traditional training practices
Including flexible training plans, collaborative learning and development and peer support
Share what works
- Produce toolkits, case studies and evaluation findings to support scalability across the energy sector.
- Promote best practice through industry and community engagement.
Schools Engagement
Are you a school careers advisor or someone who works closely with secondary students? Our School and Industry Liaison Lead can visit your school and deliver an engaging session for Year 9–11 students about careers for women in electrotechnology.
If you’d like to run a session for your female students, or want more information, we’d love to hear from you.
