We have released our first Victorian Energy Industry Skills & Training Quarterly Report – Q1 2026, providing an evidence-based snapshot of workforce demand, training activity, skills shortages and participation trends shaping Victoria’s energy sector.
Drawing on data from NCVER, Jobs and Skills Australia and the ABS, the report establishes a baseline set of indicators to support workforce planning, policy development and investment decisions.
The report examines four key areas:
- Training pipeline
- Workforce demand and shortage
- VET participation and outcomes
- Diversity and regional representation
Key Findings
The findings highlight a sector delivering strong short-term outcomes while facing growing medium-term workforce challenges. Apprenticeship and VET completions have increased significantly, particularly in the core electrician pathway, and training continues to deliver strong employment and income outcomes. However, declining numbers of apprentices in training, persistent electrician shortages and continued labour market pressure point to emerging risks in the future workforce pipeline.
The report also identifies positive signs of change. Participation by women and people with disability is increasing, specialised training linked to transmission and distribution is growing, and regional Victoria is showing stronger engagement in pathways supporting energy infrastructure development. While encouraging, these gains remain relatively small compared with the scale of workforce demand associated with electrification, renewable energy deployment and major infrastructure investment.
