Future Energy Skills Approved as a CPD Skills Development Provider

From 1 July 2028, Energy Safe Victoria will require registered electricians to complete Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Skills Development training as part of licence renewal. This means that any licence holder renewing their licence after July 2028, will be required to complete CPD Skills Development training.

Future Energy Skills is now an Energy Safe approved CPD Skills Development provider, helping licensed electrical workers access relevant, industry-focused learning that supports both compliance and capability.

What is Skills Development?

A common question is what is Skills Development and how does it differ from Skills Maintenance. While both sit under Energy Safe Victoria’s CPD framework, they are not the same thing.

Skills Maintenance focuses on refreshing existing competencies through prescribed training. Skills Development, on the other hand, is about building broader knowledge and capability in areas relevant to the electrical trade, giving workers more choice in how they stay current. Together, they form part of the CPD framework that supports ongoing competency and licence renewal.

Skills Maintenance vs Skills Development

CPD Skills Maintenance
• Mandatory for licence renewals from 1 July 2023
• 1 day (8 hour) standardised course that refreshes existing skills and competencies (i.e. maintains your skills)
• Focused on maintaining capability in core required areas

CPD Skills Development
• Mandatory for licence renewals from 1 July 2028
• 8 hours of training of your own choosing to be completed any time during the 5 years before your licence is due for renewal
• Offers flexibility and choice in learning topics to develop and grow your knowledge in areas relevant to the electrical trade

Skills Development Course Topics

Over the coming year, Future Energy Skills will launch a new range of CPD Skills Development courses designed to support licensed electrical workers with practical, relevant learning.
Courses will be delivered in flexible formats, including full-day workshops and shorter 1–2 hour sessions delivered online and in-person.

• In-depth installation testing, MEN system and Safe Working practices in complex electrical systems
• Communication and teamwork on site
• Managing challenging conversations in the workplace
• Mental health, wellbeing, and professional resilience
