Fact vs Fiction: Electrician Training and Assessment Explained

Think you know what it takes to become a licensed electrician? There are many myths out there about licensed electrician’s training and assessment that can cause confusion.
At Future Energy Skills (FES), we pride ourselves on creating a supportive environment for every candidate built on integrity, trust, teamwork, and transparency. Our assessments are conducted in line with Energy Safe Victoria’s requirements.
Below, we break down some of the most common myths we’ve heard and set the record straight on how we do things at FES.
Myth: Our assessments are dangerous as they are ‘live’.
Fact: FES has licensing assessment environments that use extra low voltage (ELV) to keep you safe until you’re licensed, with the exception of RCD testing in the LEP (Licensed Electrician’s Practical Assessment).
Myth: Trainers know what questions will be on the Licensed Electrician’s Theory Assessment (LET) paper.
Fact: The bank of LET assessment questions provides randomised questions for the assessment each time, and trainers do not have access to the licensing exams. FES trainers offer focused engaging refresher training including sample assessment papers to equip individuals with the confidence and skills they need to succeed in preparation for the LET.
Myth: The licensing assessors are harsh or are trying to trick you.
Fact: FES prides itself on hiring industry qualified assessors who are as excited as you when you pass your assessments! We assess to ERAC (Electrical Regulatory Authorities Council) and Energy Safe Victoria guidelines to keep the electrical industry safe and compliant. We also invest in our staff to ensure they are empathetic and communicative individuals. ESV have the final say on all licensing matters. Myth: It’s expensive to buy the safety & testing equipment needed for the licensing training and assessment.
Fact: Any equipment you need for your assessments you’ll need anyway when you’re licensed and on the job. You can claim the cost of training or industry relevant equipment on your tax return too!
Myth: The licensing process is stressful.
Fact: We recognise that it can be a stressful time for many. However, we strive to create an inclusive and supportive training and assessment environment.
If required, assessment candidates can apply for Special Consideration from Energy Safe Victoria and we also extend access to our EAP counselling service, provided by Hunterlink, to all candidates.
