Powering the Future: New Energy Apprenticeship Support Available

Latest update: The Albanese Labor Government is extending these payments to December 2026 following strong uptake of the KAP since it commenced on 1 July this year.
The Australian Government has launched the Key Apprenticeship Program (KAP), offering up to $10,000 in financial support to eligible apprentices starting or restarting their training in the clean energy or housing construction sectors from 1 July 2025.
This initiative is a significant step toward building a skilled workforce to support Australia’s clean energy transition — and it aligns closely with our own efforts to grow and diversify the sector through our Federally funded Building Women’s Careers Project, Powering Women into Clean Energy Apprenticeships.
Focus on the New Energy Apprenticeship Stream
The New Energy Apprenticeship stream is designed to support apprentices working in:
- Renewable energy generation (e.g., solar, wind)
- Battery storage and transmission
- Energy efficiency and management
- Installation and maintenance of clean energy systems
Eligible apprentices can receive:
- Up to $10,000 (full-time) or $5,000 (part-time)
Supporting Inclusion in Clean Energy
The KAP complements our Powering Women into Clean Energy Apprenticeships project, which is a federally funded Building Women’s Careers Program project. This 3-year initiative supports female apprentices entering the electrotechnology industry, while also working with electrical contractors and host employers to foster more inclusive, supportive workplaces that enable women to thrive in clean energy careers. Apprentices eligible for the KAP can participate in this project, which focuses on:
- Gender equity in electrotechnology (currently only 4% of the electrician workforce are women)
- Inclusive recruitment and training practices that will benefit all workers
- Free practical tools, support and mentoring for employers
Who’s Eligible?
To be eligible for the Key Apprenticeship Program, apprentices must:
- Commence or recommence their apprenticeship on or after 1 July 2025
- Be undertaking a qualification at the Certificate III, Certificate IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma level listed on the Priority List and identified as new energy or housing construction qualification.
- Be employed by an organisation that can provide meaningful exposure, experience, and work in the clean energy sector
