New Apprentice Supervision Rules now in Effect

As of September 1, 2025, new legal requirements for the supervision of apprentice electricians came into effect in Victoria, ensuring a safer and more consistent worksite for everyone.

This change is a significant step forward, and it’s something we’ve been following closely. As you may recall from our previous blog post, ‘Supervision of Apprentices‘, we informed you about Energy Safe Victoria’s review and draft changes. We are happy to see these new rules now being implemented.

The updated framework, which is a direct response to serious safety concerns and the tragic loss of five apprentices in the last decade, focuses on three key areas:

• Clearer supervision ratios: These new rules provide a specific guide on how many apprentices a qualified electrician can supervise at one time.
• Defined levels of supervision for different tasks: The rules clarify the level of oversight required for various types of work, ensuring apprentices are properly supported based on the complexity and risk of the task.
• Stronger accountability for employers and supervisors: These changes put more responsibility on those in charge to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment.

We at Future Energy Skills believe these new rules are a crucial measure to protect and support every apprentice. By providing clearer guidelines and stronger accountability, Energy Safe Victoria is taking a firm stance on safety, and we fully support this action.
