A New Name for a Big Goal: Powering Women into Clean Energy Apprenticeships

We’re excited to announce a refresh for our Building Women’s Careers project! What was once known as the “Transforming Gender Equity Clean Energy Apprenticeships” is now Powering Women into Clean Energy Apprenticeships. While the name has changed, our core mission remains the same: to address skill shortages in the clean energy sector by creating fair, equitable, and inclusive workplaces for all.
Our Mission
As one of only ten large-scale partnership projects funded by the Australian Government’s Building Women’s Careers (BWC) program, we’re dedicated to driving systemic change. Our project will address the urgent need for electricians in Victoria and Tasmania, with a focus on clean energy technologies.
The project will inform a best practice model that can be adopted across the sector and encourage employers to become part of the solution by trialling changes in employment, cultural norms and training arrangements.
The first phase will include applied research methods to identify and address specific systemic and cultural barriers to women’s participation in clean energy apprenticeships.
Research is Underway but More Data is Needed
We’ve already started our research phase, which will be completed by November 2025. Dr. Paula Fernandez Arias from our partner, Tradeswomen Australia, is leading confidential one-on-one interviews to gather crucial insights. We want to hear from employers, apprentices, and key stakeholders about the challenges and opportunities for women in the industry. Your input will help us design real solutions that can be used by employers to build more inclusive and supportive workplaces.
